Tom Hanks wishes more fans loved his understated performance in the 2002 film Road to Perdition

Two-time Academy Award winner Tom Hanks knows he identifies best with films like Forrest Gump, Toy Story, Splash, Saving Private Ryan and Philadelphia, but there’s one film he wishes he could get more love for.

“For one reason or another, no one points the way to hell,” lamented the 66-year-old in Cali. CinemaBlend’s ReelBlend Podcast last friday.

“And that was a very important movie for me.”

It’s been more than a decade since Tom starred as Michael Sullivan in the 1931 Sam Mendes movie. Barbs crime drama, which collected $183.4 million from an $80 million budget.

“You’ve got me – ‘Don Mustache’ in a hat,” Hanks joked of his facial hair.

But you also have two people who turn out to have some of the largest motion picture presences in the history of the industry with Jude Law and [Daniel] craig. And [my character] kill both [their characters]!

The A Man Called Otto producer star received no nominations for the role, but the late Paul Newman earned Oscar and Golden Globe nominations for his role as John Rooney, and the late Conrad L. Hall won a posthumous Oscar for Best Cinematography.

It’s all about logic to me and logic [my character] Tom made it clear that Michael Sullivan is, I think, flawless.

The logic of everything he does and how he says it and how he experiences things and sees them for the first time, that’s high country for me. It doesn’t matter if it’s seen as a quotation-able ‘hit’, it’s in the zeitgeist and that’s the only thing that matters.

It was Steven Spielberg who originally sent Hanks a copy of Max Allan Collins’ 1998 graphic novel while filming Castaway, and he agreed to play the role after reading David Self’s script.

When the Pinocchio star dies — who “watches Turner Classic Movies a lot” — he hopes Road to Perdition will be included in the movie retrospectives of his career.

“If someone else picked out the movies, those would only be the hits, you know, the ones that come out every Christmas,” Tom said.

“ There are a number of things I would say I’d have to go back and delve into the world of what I thought were presences and authenticities that were very, very specific to those specific characters in those specific movies… The Road to Hell would be one of those where I would say, “Please look calm here.”

This father-son flick for DreamWorks Pictures — also starring Tyler Hoechlin, Stanley Tucci, and Jennifer Jason Leigh — is currently streaming on Netflix.

Hanks also said he wanted his film debut to be included in That Thing You Do!

Actor Elvis will next executive produce the nine-episode Apple TV+ series Masters of the Air — starring Austin Butler — about the US Army Air Force’s Eighth Air Force during World War II.

Acting-wise, Tom will also produce and star in Robert Zemeckis’ one-room drama Here as well as Wes Anderson’s 1955 blockbuster Asteroid City, which hits US theaters June 13.
