FCC Orders Automated Disconnect, Lack of Internet for Civil Society, Comcast Promotion – Broad Breakfast

Jan. 25, 2023 — The Federal Communications Commission on Tuesday ordered telecom companies to cut off traffic to a calling platform that facilitated an illegal robocall scheme targeting homeowners.

MV Realty is accused of using voice service provider Twilio Networks and calling platform PhoneBurner to “flood homeowners with robocalls with misleading claims about mortgages,” a press release said.

The statement said attorneys general from Florida, Massachusetts and Pennsylvania have filed lawsuits against the real estate company that allegedly defrauded residents into mortgaging their homes for cash payments.

“Mortgage scams are among the most damaging types of robocalls we see,” the chairwoman of the Federal Communications Commission said Jessica Rosenworcel said in the statement. “Sending these unsolicited calls to financially strapped homeowners simply to offer them deceptive products and services is unconscionable. That is why we are shutting down these calls for the time being.”

The Commission is increasingly cracking down on illegal robocalls and their facilitators. Last month, the commission proposed a “record-breaking” procedure. $300 million fine for one robocall system.

And late last year, the commission expanded the robocall framework by ruling that robocalls direct calls to voicemail subject to its regulatory authority.
