The 2018 science fiction film Ready Player One, based on Ernest Cline’s novel of the same name, gave us a glimpse of what a dystopian future would look like where humanity lives mostly in a virtual reality world. Directed solely by Steven Spielberg, it likely would have given Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg a leg up for his extravagant meta-adventures, which so far have yet to come to fruition. But the one area that could benefit from his union with the metaverse is gaming and esports. New horizons and out-of-the-world simulation experiences could be the next stage in which gaming can be seen.
