Hideki Matsuyama could rewrite the history books this week with a win at the 2023 Sony Open, which kicks off on Thursday, January 12th. Matsuyama is the defending champion of the event and will become the first player since Jimmy Walker (2014-15) to successfully defend his title by winning the Waialae Country Club. Matsuyama leads the 2023 Sony Open, which also features high-profile champions like Jordan Spieth, Adam Scott and Keegan Bradley.
Matsuyama is listed at 15-1 to repeat by the latest 2023 Sony Open odds. Tom Kim, who finished fifth in the Sentry Tournament of Champions, is an 11-1 favorite on the PGA odds board. Sony Open’s best predictions for 2023
One of the big upsets the form invites at the 2023 Sony Open: Matsuyama, the defending champion and one of the favorites at 15-1, is faltering this week and barely cracking the top 10. to play last year but shot a 31-over-nine in the back to finish at 23-under this week.
However, Matsuyama has been very inconsistent this season, finishing T-21 or worse in each of his last five starts on the PGA Tour. In addition, Matsuyama has struggled hard with his accuracy this season, ranking 136th in tour greens in regulation percentage (66.98%). He’s not a strong win-it-all pick, and there are much better values on the field at the Sony Open 2023.
Another upset: Taylor Montgomery, 31-1, is a solid title hit. Montgomery has a much better chance of winning everything than his odds indicate, so he’s a target for anyone looking for a huge win.
Montgomery is one of the best putters on the PGA Tour. In fact, the 27-year-old ranks third in average (1.649), third in hits percentage (49.40%) and 11th in hits earned: put (1.220). His dismissal ability ranked 10th in scoring average (69.477) while Montgomery ranked 4.57 innings per inning.
